Baba - Bing!!!

From Gnosis:

Mike McLatchey
24-Feb-2001
Kayada
(Acoustic Music BEST.NR.319, 1993, CD)
Baba Jam Band are a true original, blending styles and sounds from a variety of sources. A German group, it's no surprise that the female vocalist sounds like Renate Knaup nor that their approach to a middle-eastern- influenced music resembles Embryo or Chris Karrer in some ways. Mix in the elements of many an Oriental Wind album, a slight Zeuhl influence, jazz, dissonant compositional elements vaguely similar to Univers Zero; give it a glossy contemporary production; and you're really only left with half the picture. The songs are contemporary arrangements of traditionals, although saz, darbuka, and other instruments from the middle east are prevalent. The first track, the 15-minute "Colours of Yemen," illustrates this well, having all the elements described above and delivered with a progressive rock edge. The album does not let up in quality through its near-double album length, with solos for violin (check out the long one in "Tamzara" that turns into a Ponty/Grapelli trade-off by the end of the song), sax, guitar; vocals both male and female, and arrangements captivating and energetic. The songs are long too, there are several over nine minutes long, all with a nice stretched-out feel and portraying a variety of moods. The more I listen to this, the more I like it; it amazes me how little fuss was made over such an amazing CD.

Pancake - In Heavy Krautrock Syrup

So much krautrock to listen to, Pancake might easily be overlooked ... which is a shame, because it's pretty darn good. Here's what New Gibraltar has to say:
German ensemble with a different cast each time (except for the guitarist). All three albums are quite different.
No Illusions is supposed to be a classic of late-70s German prog. I've only heard their Out Of The Ashes album. There are two very long tracks that are very pleasing to listen to, with lots of that good German synth work. The rest of the album is bland and non-committal to any one style. Not essential. -- Mike Ohman

May the Bearforce Be With You

What Gnosis Says About L.S. Bearforce
L. S. Bearforce, rather Lotus Schmidt's Bearforce, was a krautrock project of a later era, having found its release in the year 1983. Schmidt was the drummer for Spacebox in the 70s, although he cedes that position on this album for the many talents of Guru Guru's Mani Neumeier and conga player Winfried Beck. Schmidt takes bass duties here, joined by soloists Edmund Heimann on guitar and Embryo cohort Edgar Hoffman on sax, flute, violin and nagaswaram. As is obvious, this is an album heavy on the percussion, and also obvious, this has some pretty strong similarities to the work of Guru Guru, especially of the Live era. This is mostly improvisational work and one with a live in the studio feel. Vamps are set up, percussion flows underneath and soloists are given the opportunity to shine, and naturally, Hoffman is no slouch. But for the most part, this seems to be a somewhat uninspired effort. Perhaps it's the poor production which does very little to separate the different instruments, and often the rhythm section is too loud and the soloists get drowned out. Not to mention, despite the improvisational musical format, the soloists don't really whip it out as often or as impressively as you'd like and a great deal of the album's jams just sort of meander on senselessly. It's like you'd expect a lot more from such a strong group of musicians (and yeah, Mani does rock pretty hard here as usual) based on their past recordings. Undoubtedly this album sounded a lot better in the 80s than it does now, as in reflection this is rather forgettable.
